How to Read Your IRP5 — The Codes That Change the Bill

The certificate is the year. The payslip is a month. Here is what to check before you accept a pre-populated ITR12.27 September 2026 All articles

Start with the year and the totals

Confirm the year of assessment on the IRP5 matches the return you are filing. Filing Season 2026 is the 2026 year (1 March 2025 – 28 February 2026). The 2027 year (from 1 March 2026) is a later return. Then check the remuneration total and the employees’ tax (PAYE) total. Those two numbers drive most salary assessments.

Income source codes you will actually see

3601: salary / wages. 3605: commission. 3606: overtime. 3616: independent contractor (often no PAYE, or a different treatment). 3702: travel allowance. 3926: two-pot savings withdrawal. 3699 is the non-taxable / fringe bucket people skim past — still read it. If a code is on the certificate and missing on eFiling, do not shrug. Ask the employer or add the source.

Deductions already on the certificate

4001: pension / provident employee contributions. Retirement annuity you paid yourself may sit on a different certificate (RA fund). Medical scheme: look for the medical tax credit inputs and employer medical contributions. Do not claim the same 11F amount twice — once from the IRP5 and again from a debit order.

Net salary on the statement

What landed in the bank is after PAYE (and often UIF, medical, and retirement). SARS taxes the IRP5 gross and credits PAYE. Taxzi can estimate withheld tax from net deposits. Overwrite that with the IRP5 PAYE when you have it.

Questions

Is the amount in my bank the taxable salary?
Usually no. The IRP5 gross is what SARS starts from. PAYE is a credit.
What if my IRP5 is missing on eFiling?
Your employer must issue and submit it. You can still capture the certificate. Do not invent numbers from one payslip.

Disclaimer: This is general guidance based on the South African Income Tax Act and published SARS Interpretation Notes as at the 2026/2027 year of assessment (1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027). It is not professional tax advice. Deductibility depends on your facts. Confirm current figures on sars.gov.za before you file.

Find the income your IRP5 misses in your bank statements

Upload bank statements. Taxzi flags lines that may qualify under SARS rules. Mixed shops stay out until you say what they were. You confirm every claim. This is guidance — not a filed return.

Works with FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec, Investec and Discovery Bank PDF statements.
