Medical Tax Credits 2026/2027 — Section 6A and 6B

Credits, not deductions. Fixed 6A amounts from SARS, plus a narrower 6B formula for large out-of-pocket costs.27 September 2026 All articles

Section 6A — the monthly credit

For the 2027 year of assessment SARS’s published medical scheme fees tax credit is R376 a month for the main member, R376 for the first dependant, and R254 for each additional dependant. It reduces tax payable. It does not depend on how high the contribution is, as long as you are on a registered medical scheme.

Section 6B — extra credit

6B is for qualifying out-of-pocket medical costs (and contributions above four times the 6A credits) that pass the statutory formula. For most people under 65 that is 25% of the excess over 7.5% of taxable income. Over-65s and certain disability cases use a more generous formula. Taxzi’s profile path is conservative: we do not invent a 6B number from Clicks swipes.

What a bank line is not

A Dis-Chem or Clicks debit is usually personal. It can support a 6B claim only if it is a qualifying medical expense, you have the slip, and the formula still produces a credit. Mark it personal or claim it with a reason — do not treat the merchant name as the deduction.

Certificates

Your medical scheme issues a tax certificate. SARS often pre-populates 6A from that. Check member counts. eFiling in 2026 also added a dropdown of approved schemes to cut capture errors.
