Disability and Additional Medical Tax Credits (Section 6B)
The ITR-DD is the gate. A diagnosis in a chat is not.27 September 2026 All articles
6A still runs
Medical scheme fees tax credit (6A) is the monthly fixed amount for members and dependants. Disability does not replace 6A. It can change how 6B extra credit is calculated.
What 6B needs
Qualifying medical expenses not recovered from the scheme, and the statutory formula. Where a disability (or physical impairment) is claimed, SARS wants the prescribed confirmation — typically the ITR-DD completed by the right practitioner — not a WhatsApp from a relative. Read the current 6B rules on sars.gov.za; the percentage and the expense list are statutory.
What does not walk in
Gym, ordinary groceries, and unlisted wellness apps. Keep invoices that match the qualifying list. A dependant’s disability follows that person and the person who paid the qualifying costs, with the usual scheme-certificate discipline.
Taxzi
We may list medical-looking bank lines. We do not complete an ITR-DD. You review with the scheme and the practitioner. You file. No refund is promised.
Questions
- Is a chronic script enough for the disability 6B treatment?
- Not by itself. SARS wants the prescribed disability confirmation where you claim that route.
- Does Taxzi decide if I have a disability?
- No. That is a medical and statutory form, not a bank-tag.
Disclaimer: This is general guidance based on the South African Income Tax Act and published SARS Interpretation Notes as at the 2026/2027 year of assessment (1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027). It is not professional tax advice. Deductibility depends on your facts. Confirm current figures on sars.gov.za before you file.

Find the medical expense claims in your bank statements
Upload bank statements. Taxzi flags lines that may qualify under SARS rules. Mixed shops stay out until you say what they were. You confirm every claim. This is guidance — not a filed return.
Works with FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec, Investec and Discovery Bank PDF statements.
