The Local Interest Exemption (Section 10(1)(i))
Discovery “interest boost” is still interest. A crypto off-ramp is not.27 September 2026 All articles
The exemption
For the current individual tables: R23,800 if you are under 65, R34,500 from 65. Only South African-source interest. Amounts above the slice are taxable at your marginal rate.
What the statement calls it
Interest earned, interest boost, interest cashback. If the model tagged those lines as INVESTMENT, they are still interest. They do not get the CGT 40% inclusion or the R50,000 CGT exclusion.
TFSA is separate
Interest inside a tax-free savings account is already exempt (section 12T). It does not consume the 10(1)(i) slice.
Questions
- Is a R2 interest credit taxable?
- It is income, then exempt if you are under the annual slice. Declare the IT3(b) total; do not hide it.
- Is EasyEquities interest the same as a share sale?
- No. A withdrawal of proceeds is usually CGT. Cash interest in a bank product is 10(1)(i).
