Should I Accept My SARS Auto-Assessment? A Checklist
Accept means you are satisfied the year is complete — not that the SMS looked official.27 September 2026 All articles
Accept only if nothing is missing
SARS builds auto-assessment from third-party data: IRP5, medical, interest, some funds. If you agree with the outcome, Filing Season 2026 says you need not take further action. If any real income or deduction is absent, you edit and submit. Deadlines: non-provisional corrections to 23 October 2026; provisional to 22 January 2027.
Walk this list before you tap agree
Every employer IRP5, including a March exit. Local interest IT3(b) on every bank. A two-pot 3926 withdrawal. Freelance, rental, or e-hailing not on an IRP5. Crypto disposals. RA contributions not on the IRP5. 18A certificates. A dependant change on medical aid. Foreign income. If any of those happened, do not accept a return that ignores them.
A refund is not a character reference
An auto-assessment refund can still be wrong. SARS can verify later. Taking the money does not freeze the facts. If you edit, you may owe or get a different refund. Taxzi does not file the accept/reject for you.
Where to check
“My Auto Assessment Status” on the SARS Online Query System from 1 July 2026, and eFiling. Confirm the notice on sars.gov.za — not a lookalike SMS.
Questions
- If I accept, can I still claim a forgotten RA later?
- You would need to edit or object within the allowed process. Do not accept if you already know a certificate is missing.
- Provisional taxpayers can get auto-assessment in 2026?
- Yes, some may. Disagree and you still have until 22 January 2027.
Disclaimer: This is general guidance based on the South African Income Tax Act and published SARS Interpretation Notes as at the 2026/2027 year of assessment (1 March 2026 – 28 February 2027). It is not professional tax advice. Deductibility depends on your facts. Confirm current figures on sars.gov.za before you file.

Find the income your IRP5 misses in your bank statements
Upload bank statements. Taxzi flags lines that may qualify under SARS rules. Mixed shops stay out until you say what they were. You confirm every claim. This is guidance — not a filed return.
Works with FNB, Standard Bank, Absa, Nedbank, Capitec, Investec and Discovery Bank PDF statements.
